REM sleep is normally characterised by rapid eye movements (hence the name) and temporary muscle paralysis. This paralysis, called atonia, prevents us from physically acting out our dreams.<\/p><p data-start=\"377\" data-end=\"722\">In people with RBD, this paralysis is absent. As a result, they physically act out their dreams during REM sleep \u2014 which can include talking, shouting, flailing, kicking, or even injuring themselves or their bed partner. The dreams themselves are often intense, but rarely remembered, so people with RBD are often unaware they have the disorder.<\/p><p data-start=\"724\" data-end=\"882\">RBD is more common in men than in women, and it tends to affect people in middle or older age more than younger individuals. The exact cause is still unknown.<\/p><p data-start=\"884\" data-end=\"1282\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">About <strong data-start=\"890\" data-end=\"997\">80% of people diagnosed with RBD go on to develop a degenerative neurological condition within 10 years<\/strong>. Sadly, in most cases, RBD turns out to be an early sign of Parkinson\u2019s disease \u2014 around <strong data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1159\">80\u201385% of people with RBD eventually receive a Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis<\/strong>. The connection also works the other way around: people who already have Parkinson\u2019s may also experience RBD as a symptom.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6cf4eb0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6cf4eb0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How do you know if you have RBD?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-56374ee elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"56374ee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"573\">You\u2019re dreaming and suddenly realise that you\u2019re kicking, hitting, laughing, shouting \u2014 or making some other movement \u2014 and that\u2019s what wakes you up.<\/li><li data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"573\">More often, you don\u2019t notice it yourself, but a bed partner points it out after being woken up by your restless behaviour.<\/li><li data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"573\">Sometimes, people with RBD move so violently during sleep that they fall out of bed or bump into something.<\/li><li data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"573\">As mentioned earlier, aggressive behaviour is also possible.<br data-start=\"447\" data-end=\"450\" \/>Because of this, people with RBD can injure themselves or others.<\/li><li data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"573\">During the day, people with RBD are often very tired.<\/li><\/ul><p>If you have unexplained injuries or bruises, wake up while moving or making noise, or your bed partner complains about extreme restlessness \u2014 and you\u2019re also feeling tired \u2014 it may be a reason to see a doctor.
